HEROES AMONG US AWARDAuburn, Maine On Wednesday, May 6, Maine’s two renowned high school basketball managers/players Josh Titus of Edward Little High School and Patrick Thibodeau of Greely High School were honored with the Boston Celtics’ Heroes Among Us Award, presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery. During a time-out in the second quarter of the Celtics play-off game against the Orlando Magic, the two high school seniors accepted their awards on center court with their photos shining high above them on the Jumbotron. As the announcer began recounting the young men’s stories, the TD Banknorth Garden’s capacity crowd of more than 18, 600 fans jumped to its feet and saluted Josh and Patrick with a long, standing ovation. As the announcer began recounting the young men’s stories, the TD Banknorth Garden’s capacity crowd of more than 18, 600 fans jumped to its feet and saluted Josh and Patrick with a long, standing ovation. “We are very pleased to recognize Josh and Patrick who serve as an inspiration to so many all across the United States with their perseverance and determination in overcoming boundaries and obstacles,” stated Rich Gotham, Boston Celtics President. “The Heroes Among Us program honors New Englanders who have made an overwhelming impact on the lives of others and through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community.” In addition, Josh and Patrick served as Honorary Captains for the evening, joining Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic team captains and game officials at The Garden’s center court prior to the start of the game. The two young men and their guests were also treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Celtics’ corporate offices, rich in the organization’s 62-year tradition and history. Since 1997, the Celtics Heroes Among Us program presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery has been recognizing outstanding individuals at Boston Celtics home games. Josh and Patrick will be invited back to Boston this summer to join the other 50-plus 2008/2009 Heroes Among Us award recipients at a ceremony that last year took place at the Massachusetts State House. Background:Josh Titus who faces the challenges of autism and Patrick Thibodeau who has Downs Syndrome embody the spirit of basketball by exemplifying sportsmanship, supporting and inspiring their teammates and coaches, and showing an ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries. Both high school seniors were awarded the 2009 Maine Spirit of the Game Award at the Maine All-Star Basketball Games at Husson University in Bangor, Maine on March 13th.
In April the Josh, Patrick and their families traveled to Detroit for the NCAA Final Four® Mens Games. Their special story aired nationally in an extended segment on CBS Sports on April 4 before the start of the first game. To honor them, Maine Governor John Baldacci declared April 4, 2009 Patrick Thibodeau Day and Josh Titus Day. On April 9, the two appeared for a live interview on The CBS Early Show. On April 29, they traveled to the Maine State House where they were recognized in the Maine House of Representatives, followed by a meeting with Governor John Baldacci. This summer, both boys will attend the Celtics Youth Basketball Camps.
